They're teaching the next generation of Republicans

From the WaPo (via Atrios):

Many American youngsters participating in federally funded abstinence-only programs have been taught over the past three years that abortion can lead to sterility and suicide, that half the gay male teenagers in the United States have tested positive for the AIDS virus, and that touching a person's genitals "can result in pregnancy," a congressional staff analysis has found.

Some course materials cited in Waxman's report present as scientific fact notions about a man's need for "admiration" and "sexual fulfillment" compared with a woman's need for "financial support." One book in the "Choosing Best" series tells the story of a knight who married a village maiden instead of the princess because the princess offered so many tips on slaying the local dragon. "Moral of the story," notes the popular text: "Occasional suggestions and assistance may be alright, but too much of it will lessen a man's confidence or even turn him away from his princess."

And with all the misinformation in there about sex education, there'll be a bumper crop of more little tykes to brainwash.

Priorities, priorities. . .

Congress has cut the budget for the National Science Foundation, an engine for research in science and technology, just two years after endorsing a plan to double the amount given to the agency.

Supporters of scientific research, in government and at universities, noted that the cut came as lawmakers earmarked more money for local projects like the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in Cleveland and the Punxsutawney Weather Museum in Pennsylvania.

That's the problem with you scientist types out there. You keep coming up with facts that get in the way of our agenda. Now siddownandshaddup.

How Republicans win elections. . . .

This is one of the many fine campaign tactics that the Republicans have incorporated into their playbook (thanks to Buzzflash for the heads-up here).

Now let's hope that they go "look at the money trail" and find out just how many Republicans were in on this piece of shinola. And then toss 'em all in jail.

What CBS and NBC think "free speech" means

The United Church of Christ (UCC) plans to run a major ad campaign in December to raise public awareness of the denomination. One of the ads is meant, in the words of a UCC press release, to convey the message "that -- like Jesus -- the United Church of Christ seeks to welcome all people, regardless of ability, age, race, economic circumstance or sexual orientation."
. . .
Yet, according to a press release out this evening from the UCC, both CBS and NBC have refused to air the ad because the subject matter is "too controversial."

I think that any thinking person should call or write CBS and NBC and ask them what's the big controversy. Perhaps they can explain their fence-sitting here.
